Olin Brass International: Company Profiles
Below are capsule summaries of the joint ventures and subsidiary companies currently operating under the Olin Brass International umbrella.
Established in 1995, GBC Metals Asia Pacific (GMAP), is a wholly-owned sales and marketing subsidiary of Olin Brass located in Singapore. GMAP markets Olin Brass and Dowa-Olin Metals products in wide range of key Asian markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, India, Korea, Taiwan, Viet Nam, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. GMAP also operates a representative office in Shanghai which coordinates delivery of specialized products manufactured by the Olin Brass family of companies.
Olin Luotong Metals (OLM)
Olin Luotong Metals (OLM) was established in 2002 as a joint venture of Olin Brass and Chinalco-Luoyang Copper Company. The company operates a value-added service center in Guangzhou, PRC, distributing Olin Brass high performance alloys and other standard industrial alloys, as well as slitting, winding, packaging, and delivery services for major automotive, electronic, and electrical component manufacturers in the Chinese market.
Olin Brass Fabricated Products is a precision stamper of copper based alloys, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, carbon steels and clad materials serving a variety of end use markets. Our products include everything from parts for demanding automotive applications and surface critical decorative plumbing fixtures, to power distribution and electronic components.
With over 80 years of experience utilizing proven stamping techniques, we are uniquely equipped to deliver cost-effective components of the highest quality to our customers. These capabilities are enhanced by our location on the same site as Olin Brass’s primary strip mill in East Alton, giving us the benefit of vertical supply chain integration with copper components at the source.
Olin Brass Fabricated Products is uniquely positioned to utilize the most cost effective stamping processes for a given application, based on annual usage, complexity, base material and other factors.
We design and run tools on over 40 presses, including progressive, transfer and multislide technologies. Components are produced with the use of tailored gaging for quality control and supported by ISO and TS certified procedures. Regardless of whether the product life is 5 years or 25 years, as long as the part is active we will maintain the tooling for the full life of the program.
While our primary service is to customers who have a finalized stamped part design, we can and do collaborate on redesigns in order to improve metal efficiency and production rate. This has resulted in some conversions from screw machine parts and tube products into stampings. Olin Brass Fabricated Products is unique in that we design tools and manufacture products utilizing three distinct metal stamping technologies: progressive, transfer, and multislide.
In a Progressive Press, the metal strip will carry the part through the tooling. Progressive dies provide flexibility due to their construction, which makes them interchangeable among many presses, given sufficient tonnage and bed size. To further enhance cost effectiveness, we will design multiple cavity tooling to maximize production efficiency for higher volume applications.
Our progressive presses range in size from 60T to 800T. We will design to build according to your specifications, or accept any existing tooling that you currently own.
In a transfer press operation, mechanical “fingers” grip each part and move it through the tools. This transfer slide will automatically index the parts to the next station with each stroke of the press.
Olin Brass Fabricated Products has a wide range of transfer presses to accommodate a variety of product sizes. This allows us to design complex parts that may require up to twelve stations or deep draw up to a six-inches in length.
A multiside press can be utilized in operations where the edge of the input strip doubles as an edge of the part being fabricated. It offers greatly enhanced cost-effectiveness by minimizing the amount of scrap produced, and by allowing the use of lower cost tooling on less complex parts.
Engineering and Q.A. Services
Engineering at Olin Brass Fabricated Products is handled by a team of professionals whose depth of experience allows us to take on the most challenging stamping projects in terms of design complexity and premium surface critical applications. Their services represent an extraordinary value; after a one-time charge for the initial tool build, it is our policy to fully maintain the tools at our cost for the life of the product.
Calibration and Inspections
Gaging methods and equipment are tailored to each specific part design and key characteristics dictated by customer requirements. A thorough calibration system verifies all gages are calibrated on a yearly basis, with more frequent inspections for any signs of wear or damage. Primary inspection of product at the press by the operator emphasizes our commitment of building quality into our parts. Control plans detail the in-process inspection requirements and are part of the PPAP submittal process used for initial samples.
One of the unique services offered by Fabricated Products is metallurgical support, especially relating to copper based alloys. Working with the customer’s design engineering team, we build around the most critical functional and material requirements of the application. We have access to the material data generated by Olin Brass in order to suggest alloy and temper options that will best serve the end use and insure manufacturability of the part.

Today, we ship wrought foil products with thicknesses of 10 microns and peelable foils of 1 micron. In addition, we offer a variety of value added surface enhancements and coatings, including our signature CopperBond® treated foils and CopperBond® XTF Xtra Thin foils.

Precision Metal Foils Tailored To Your Needs
Somers Thin Strip produces specialty metal foils whose precision and performance are unsurpassed in the industry. Our product line, which includes stainless steel foils and a number of distinct precision copper foils, is outlined below.
Somers Thin Strip produces extremely flat, thin and wide stainless steel material to the tightest tolerances necessary for the most stringent applications in a wide variety of markets. Reader head suspensions, photo etch components, deep drawn components, and solar panel substrates – that’s just a sampling of the extremely demanding stainless steel products we support.
Roller Copper Foil (RA Copper Foil)
Thin rolled copper foils (known as RA Copper Foils in the printed circuit industry) are a mainstay of Somers’ precision copper foil product line. Using a combination of rolling, annealing, leveling, slitting and finishing, we produce specialty copper alloys custom-made to specific customer applications, including printed circuits, electromagnetic shielding and rechargeable batteries.
Copperbond Treated Copper Foil
Rapid growth in the flexible printed circuit and battery industries has fueled parallel advances in our own technology, resulting in our development of proprietary surface treatments and enhancements for increasingly specialized applications, including:
One example is our CopperBond® dendritic surface treatment, which provides a tightly adhering, uniform, electrochemical deposition of copper or copper-nickel dendrites on the foil surface. It offers significantly greater bond strength over that of smooth copper, due to a tightly controlled, irregular topography that causes a uniquely effective “hooking action” to occur between the copper, adhesive, and substrate.
Multiple types of surface treatment are available on the rolled foils, including CopperBond® Pink treatment, CopperBond DT™ (double-side-treatment), CopperBond Black™ (a low profile copper-nickel treatment), as well as nickel-plating.
Additionally, increased miniaturization and performance demands have also driven Somers to introduce copper alloy foils with higher strengths and different properties than pure copper foils, rolled to thicknesses from 0.00039” (10 µm) to .016″ (400 µm), with or without surface treatment.
As electronics products become smaller, faster and more complex, the demand for high-density interconnect (HDI) printed circuit boards continues to rise. CopperBond® XTF was developed to give forward-thinking designers the tools necessary to use HDI technology to its full capacity.
CopperBond® XTF is an extra-thin releasable (peelable) foil on a thicker carrier foil, with customized thickness ranging from 1 to 5 microns to meet your applications requirements. The extra thin ED Foil is carried by a releasable 1-ounce (35 micron) copper foil, which utilizes an inorganic release layer to provide exceptionally consistent release force even when laminated at elevated temperatures.

While Olin Brass is a major player in virtually every industry where copper alloys are utilized, our core business remains centered in East Alton, Illinois, and the brass mill Franklin Olin founded nearly a century ago. Today, it’s among the most productive facilities of its kind in the world, capable of turning out well over a million pounds of finished product – copper alloys in coil form – every working day.
