In September, Olin Brass named Kon John to the post of Director of Business Development for CuVerro® Products. The appointment is fitting, in light of John’s successful 2-year tenure as Olin Brass Marketing Director and the enormous potential of bactericidal copper in the healthcare market and beyond. Here, Kon discusses the future of CuVerro and the steps he plans to take in the coming months.
Help us understand exactly what the CuVerro name refers to. Is it a class of copper alloys or simply a brand name?
Actually, it’s both. CuVerro is a brand name that refers to a class of EPA-registered solid surface copper alloys that continuously kill 99.9% of infectious bacteria* 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The name is a registered trademark of Olin Brass.
As Director of Business Development, is your primary focus on building the brand with the public or working with manufacturing affiliates?
Again, the answer is both. My focus is to build brand awareness for CuVerro with the public, and working closely with our manufacturing affiliates will be key to creating a pull from the marketplace. The co-branding strategies we develop with those affiliates are clearly very important in our overall effort to heighten consumer awareness of the CuVerro name and consumer benefits.
What product areas and markets do you believe hold the most promise for CuVerro moving forward?
Obviously, the healthcare space is extremely important to us, simply because CuVerro can be so impactful in improving cleanliness and ultimately creating a cleaner environment for the sick and injured. The same holds true for the public space, where we believe virtually every industry represents an opportunity. Transportation, education, government, fitness, hospitality – all hold promise for CuVerro in the near and long term.
What do you see as the biggest challenge ahead for CuVerro?
Once they know the science behind the product, people agree that using CuVerro is simply “the right thing to do” because it’s such an easy way to improve cleanliness and dramatically reduce potential exposure to infectious bacteria. The key for us is to make sure people get that message. So our biggest challenge will be creating and executing an impactful and sustainable message that educates the public to embrace the technology.
So what’s the next step?
Going forward, we will be embarking on a brand campaign for products manufactured from CuVerro bactericidal copper alloys that will transcend the healthcare space and communicate the need to create cleaner environments in our everyday living. Thanks to the great work everyone here has done over the past few years in building our team of affiliates, we have an extremely robust foundation in place. Now it’s time to get the word out about how CuVerro can make life better for all of us.
*Laboratory testing shows that, when cleaned regularly, CuVerro surfaces kill greater than 99.9% of the following bacteria within 2 hours of exposure: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli O157:H7, and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE). The use of CuVerro® bactericidal copper products is a supplement to and not a substitute for standard infection control practices; users must continue to follow all current infection control practices, including those practices related to cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces. This surface has been shown to reduce microbial contamination, but it does not necessarily prevent cross contamination. CuVerro® is a registered trademark of GBC Metals, LLC.
