Modula S Net-Zero Infection Isolation Units Incorporating CuVerro – A Finalist in SXSW Eco Place by Design

October 1, 2015

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.—Modula S, Inc. has developed rapidly deployable, net-zero, infection isolation units that use ultra-efficient building envelope technology to moderate the temperature of the unit, improving comfort by up to 40%, while incorporating easy-to-clean CuVerro® bactericidal copper surfaces to simplify decontamination efforts. The project will be presented at SXSW Eco in Austin, TX, on October 5-7, where it is a Place by Design finalist, highlighted in the Resilience category. Following SXSW Eco, it will be on display at the TIDES Annual Technology Demonstration at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC, on October 6-9.

These rapidly deployable treatment units are net-zero energy and they create surplus solar energy that may be used to power co-located communications command centers, which are crucial for patient treatment and better public health outcomes. The modular units can stand alone as a single isolation clinic or be easily integrated for use as an infection isolation ward attached to a tent in a remote location or on the grounds of a permanent hospital. Thermal comfort is improved by up to 40% compared to tent hospitals, as measured by PPD indices.

“We are thrilled to share a full-scale ergonomic mock-up of our design with our stakeholders in Washington, including USAID and the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance,” says Jack Rutherford, Modula S Founder & CEO. “We are pleased to provide a rapidly deployable resource that can provide remote energy and communications to keep healthcare workers connected while improving patient comfort.”

The autonomous units can easily deploy in 3-7 days with ten people, and without a crane, in remote and isolated communities depending on the size of the configuration. Structurally sound and US building code compliant, the units arrive fully stocked with supplies.

The interior walls and fixtures are made with CuVerro® - a unique bactericidal copper alloy that continuously kills 99.9% of infectious bacteria* within two hours of contact when cleaned regularly. The inherent bactericidal properties of the corrosion-resistant CuVerro® surface work 24/7, never washing out or wearing away.

“The energy-efficient Modula S Infection Isolation Unit is an innovation for remote healthcare and patient treatment,” says Kon John, CuVerro National Sales Director. “We are excited that CuVerro will be an integral part of the units, helping to protect patients and our communities from harmful bacteria.”

Modula S is start-up offering a high quality, factory produced construction system that enables net-zero energy buildings.  Modula S supports stakeholders in the developer, construction and energy industries and develops its own building projects. Our buildings and products may also be purchased for rapid military or humanitarian deployment in an FAR compliant manner via other transaction authority with the support of the National Security Technology Accelerator. Modula S buildings cost up to 10% less to construct than standard technologies and may be built with greater speed and accuracy. Modula S is an awardee of the Ebola Grand Challenge, granted by USAID, the White House OSTP, CDC and Dept. of Defense.

*Laboratory testing shows that, when cleaned regularly, CuVerro surfaces kill greater than 99.9% of the following bacteria within 2 hours of exposure: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli O157:H7, and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE).The use of CuVerro® bactericidal copper products is a supplement to and not a substitute for standard infection control practices; users must continue to follow all current infection control practices, including those practices related to cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces. This surface has been shown to reduce microbial contamination, but it does not necessarily prevent cross contamination.
